© 2009-2010 Ugur Akinci WRITING THE PAPER – The most important rule in writing a research paper (or essay) is this: write the first draft FAST, before the dreaded "writer's block" sets in. Once you have your outline under your belt, and you have enough research notes in your head and on your computer, it's time to hit the gas pedal. REMEMBER: Procrastination WILL try to separate you from your work. Your mind will come up with 1,001 reasons why you should not write JUST YET… If you stop, you'll lose. While writing your research paper do NOT do the following: Play video games Watch TV or sports competitions Send text messages to your friends Talk more than 5 minutes on the phone Keep visiting the refrigerator Taking one shower after another Watch a movie (in the name of "multitasking") Setting up your laptop on a gorgeous balcony overlooking a picture-perfect view Play with your children, friends, pets, robots, etc. Clean the house, rearrange your XYZ collection, going out for shopping Doing MORE research for an EVEN BETTER paper Etc.
Remember: PERFECT is the mortal enemy of the GOOD. Once you select your topic, do your outline, finish your research, it's time to "hit the road," as they say. A writer is a "writer" only on the days that he or she writes. So there's really no substitute to writing a research paper other than gluing you bottom to a chair and start writing it, and doing it without stopping until you write the first draft – a good 15 to 20 pages. Once you finish the FIRST DRAFT, it's time to cool off. Get up from you chair and let what you've written sit there for a while, but not more than a day. The next day, go back to what you've written and check out the following: Does the first draft follow your OUTLINE? Have you supported your arguments with enough logical evidence? Are there any spelling errors and grammar mistakes? Are your references, footnotes, bibliography complete? Is your CONCLUSION what it's supposed to be? Does it deliver the PROMISE made in your Thesis Statement (in the Introduction chapter)?
It'd be great if you have the luxury of having someone you trust read your paper and give you his or her feedback. A second set of (educated) eyes is always better than one. But make sure that the reviewer is in a position to evaluate your paper for what it's worth. For example, your roommate might be a good reader even if your paper is on anthropology and the roommate is majoring in engineering. However, don’t expect a reader who is a high school dropout to understand your research paper on Prime Numbers or the World Gold Standard and provide a meaningful feedback. A great PROOFREADING TIP: Apply this technique if you cannot find anyone to proofread your paper for you – read your paper BACKWARDS, from last page to the front page. When you do that the mind cannot establish the regular semantic connections and instead perce4ives each word as an isolated unit. When the pages are viewed in that unorthodox fashion, any spelling errors jump out of the page easily. Try it and see how powerful a technique this is. Once your paper is proofread and reviewed and written for at least a second time you are ready to turn it in – hopefully on time. It's time to treat yourself to something nice. After all that hard work don’t forget to reward yourself. You've earned it!
