How to Write a Great Travel Article

Travel is a competitive industry. Cruise and hotel companies use every tool in their arsenal to sell packages and make money. That's why, even in this day and age of the Internet, direct mail is still selling a lot of cruises and hotel rooms.

Here is how you can write a travel brochure and be a part of this exciting copy writing niche:

COVER PAGE: State the obvious offer with an eye-catching photo or artwork.

Take the guesswork out of why you are sending the piece through the mail.

BAD COPY: "Take a break from work! You deserve it" superimposed over a photo of a happy person sitting at his desk in office.)

BETTER COPY: "Enjoy $3,000 Off on Your 7-Day Bahamas Cruise Leaving on September 24th" superimposed over a photo of a happy COUPLE standing on the deck of a cruise ship, with gorgeous azure blue islands in the background.

INSIDE PAGE 1: List all the features and benefits that your company offers. Make it very clear why it is to the consumer's advantage to take this travel opportunity -- now.

For example, for a CRUISE BROCHURE, you may want to emphasize features (with benefits) such as:

  • A spa (Swedish, Feng Shui, or other), or licensed massage therapy facility

  • Promenade Deck

  • Wine selection, wine service, distinctive vintage wines

  • World-class restaurants

  • Cozy restaurants, cafes

  • Fitness equipment and gym

  • Medical facility, on-board health care

  • High ranking by industry organizations

  • Recognition and praise by professional reviewers

  • Testimonials

  • Luxury rooms and suites

  • Gorgeous views

  • Golf classes and clinics

  • On-board educational sessions, workshops, seminars

  • Fun, entertainment, dance, comedy, shows

  • Shopping opportunities

  • Music lessons

  • Computer, Internet, Email access, wi-fi hookup

  • Personal services, butler service

  • Laundry and dry-cleaning services

  • Drinks, bars, in-room bar

  • Movies (in-room cable, built-in theater)

  • Land tours

    How to follow a FEATURE with a BENEFIT:

    BAD COPY that does not stress the benefit: "We offer a state-of-the-art Swedish spa and sauna."

    GOOD COPY that follows a feature with a benefit: "Relax your weary bones, rejuvenate your metabolism, open up your pores and get rid of all the toxins at our state-of-the-art Swedish spa and sauna."

    SCHEDULE or OFFER PAGE: Make sure you include a TABLE in which all your offers are displayed clearly with their prices.

    CONTACT INFO: Every page should display clear contact information, like a FREE phone number and a web site URL. Page footer would be a good place to display that indispensable information.
