Good and Bad Email Subject Lines

How to Write an Email Subject Line

How to Write an Email | Email TEMPLATES

Writing a good subject line (as well as a bad email subject line) can make all the difference in the world in your email campaigns.

You can send all the e-mails you want but if nobody's opening and reading them, then obviously it's no good.

Experts agree that the most important part of an e-mail is a good Subject Line because most people decide whether to open an e-mail or not by looking at its subject line.

After studying 40 million e-mails sent by its customers, MailChimp.com has come up with lists of the Best and Worst subject lines.

In sum – the more descriptive and truthful the subject line, the more people read it.

The more flashy and bombastic ("FREE Offer – Become a Billionaire within 24 Hours!!!") the less it will be read.

5 Best Subject Lines:

1. [COMPANY NAME] Sales & Marketing Newsletter
2. Eye on the [COMPANY NAME] Update (Oct 31 - Nov 4)
3. [COMPANY NAME] Staff Shirts & Photos
4. [COMPANY NAME] May 2005 News Bulletin!
5. [COMPANY NAME] Newsletter - February 2006

5 Worst Subject Lines:

1. Last Minute Gift - We Have The Answer
2. Valentines - Shop Early & Save 10%
3. Give a Gift Certificate this Holiday
4. Valentine's Day Salon and Spa Specials!
5. Gift Certificates - Easy & Elegant Giving - Let Them Choose
