How to Write Release Notes

Release notes is an important part of the software development process. Every new release of the software should be accompanied by a set of Release Notes.

Here are the main components of Release Notes:

1) FRONT COVER

Should clearly state the TITLE/NAME of the software, the RELEASE and VERSION number of the SOFTWARE; Company Title; Document Number; Date of the Document; VERSION number of the DOCUMENT (if any); any Proprietary and/or Copyright language appropriate for the document.

Optional: Contact Info; Company Logo; Product Image.

2) OVERVIEW

A short summary of the things to follow. Highlights of the changes.

3) NEW FEATURES

A list and description of the new features included in the new release. An explanation of why they were included.

4) BUG FIXES

A list of the software bugs fixed in the new release.

5) BACK COVER

Company Name; Logo; Address; Contact Info; any Proprietary and/or Copyright language appropriate for the document.
