How to Write an Obituary

Condolence letters and condolence notes are a fact of life just like death and affliction, unfortunately.

Feel free to use some of these expressions in a letter of condolence:

You have my heartfelt sympathy in this hour of your bereavement.

I wish I might find words in which to express my sorrow at yourloss which is also mine. May you have the strength to bear thisgreat affliction.

You have my (our) heartfelt sympathy.

Here are two short and quick condolence notes, the kind you can send inside an appropriate postcard or Hallmark special occasion card:

----------------------------------------

Dear Jane,

I am at a loss for words to express our shock and grief at hearing Jim’s sudden death. We didn’t even know he was hospitalized to tell you the truth. He was always so full of life and always eager to offer a hand when we needed help. He was more than a neighbor and friend. He was like one of our very own. We’ll miss him badly.

Please let us know if we can be of any help in any way. We’ll stop by shortly to see you and hug you and share your loss to the best we can.

Your friends, today and forever, and with love

Sharlene (and Tim)

----------------------------------------

Dear Marlon,

We are stunned to hear that Emma has passed away this past Saturday at her home. It’s hard for us to express our shock and grief as Emma was a lot more than that capable Realtor who sold us our first home; as you know, she was also a dear friend.

We’ll always remember her infectious laughter and good spirits. I’m wondering if there’s anything we can do to help you in your time of great sadness. Please do not hesitate to give us a call 24-7. We're here for you and we mean that.

Again, please accept our deepest sorrow for losing such a lovely mutual friend. Your great loss is truly our loss as well.

With all our love,

Bob and Janice
