A eulogy is an critical opportunity to honor a life lived well while providing solace and some degree of closure to the survivors. It requires immaculate writing in which profound themes can be articulated without, however, going over the top. It requires the kind of sympathetic yet delicate balancing act that characterizes all good prose.

Here are some phrases compiled from many different great eulogies that you can use in the eulogy you might have to prepare for a dear friend, a beloved, or a departed family member:

(For convenience sake we’ll use the male third person pronoun “he” but we mean no slight to our female readers and writers. Please change all male pronouns to their female equivalents if need be.)



… as we gather here facing once again the mystery of death…

He was great yet his greatness was untouched by arrogance…

…as his spirit looks upon us…

The light that we could see has gone out but his was no ordinary light…

He was taken from us prematurely, before he could finish his work (or) after a long life during which he accomplished more than any mortal could aspire to…

He was kind and considerate even in moments of crisis and despair…

Now that he is gone, we all have a huge void in our lives…

He was faithful to the principles we all hold dear…

These are the facts of his life which we’ll cherish forever…

He was funny, but not in a sarcastic and bitter way…

He struggled a lot in his life. He was rewarded by the good Lord with eternal peace and rest…

As we gather here to mourn our great loss he must be looking at us from beyond the clouds and trying to say this: …

He spoke to our dreams in a most unusual way…

… a good heart, a generous soul …

Unfortunately, we live in a culture that does not have much room for grief…

So let’s all seek consolation in that love which never dies…

He had a passionate love for life…

He tried to ease the pain of others event though it magnified his…

His life has always been in the sunshine…

Someone once said “a man is not completely born until he is dead…” I think what that means is…
