Copy Writing Techniques for Makeup, Skincare, or Fashion Catalogs

How to Write Commercial Copy

How to Write Catalog Copy

© 2010 Ugur Akinci

Try these techniques when putting together sparkling copy for makeup, haircare, and fashion catalogs.

Technique 1:

Combine nouns that express grandeur like SPLENDOR with different fragrant FLOWERS, to form compound nouns to describe an item.

Example: Rose Splendor, Aspen Splendor, Bellflower Splendor, Coriander Splendor, Jasmine Splendor, Lily Splendor, Marigold Splendor, Narcissus Splendor, Tulip Splendor, Violet Splendor, etc.

Switch the second word to GLORY and see what happens:

Rose Glory, Aspen Glory, Bellflower Glory, Coriander Glory, Jasmine Glory, Lily Glory, Marigold Glory, Narcissus Glory, Tulip Glory, Violet Glory, etc.

Technique 2:

Combine a PROMISE with a well-known HOLIDAY or SPECIAL OCCASION DEADLINE.

Example: Look FABULOUS before CHRISTMAS! Jump with JOY by Valentine's Day! Look and feel 10 YEARS YOUNGER by your BIRTHDAY! Enjoy HEALTHY HAIR ROOTS by your next ANNIVERSARY!

Technique 3:

Use "How To" to turn catalog copy into a mini-tutorial

Example: "How to entertain with great gifts under $10..."

"How to look gorgeous day and night..."

"How to create super-gloss eyelashes..."

Technique 4:

Use any combination of the following COLOR terms:

punch-up the color, gloss, mellow, sharp, distinguished, definition, palette, versatile, dark, light, shade, sensational, sunshine, rose petal, golden, mocha, sand, warm, cool, candy, deluxe, matte, etc.

Gold, silver, diamond, ruby, topaz, emerald, facet, faceted, glimmer, bright, shine, faux stones, lattice work, accented, burnished brass, polished gold, ring, necklace, bracelet, tear shaped, pearl, mother of pearl, etc.

Technique 6:

Use any combination of the following PERFUME terms:

eau de spray, perfume, eau de cologne, fragrance, memories, distilled, floral, spicy, mature, distinguished, pure, rare essence, exotic, orient, toilette spray, aroma, seductive, provocative, sexy, chic, oriental, alluring, mysterious, scent, sensational, feminine, masculine, shocking, daring, outrageous, courageous, venturesome, risky, etc.
